Carey Wins Five Awards at the 2026 IFLR Americas Awards, Including Lifetime Achievement Honor for Jaime Carey

  • Carey was named Chile National Firm of the Year and Chile National Firm of the Year – Mining.
  • Carey partner Rafael Vergara received the Partner of the Year – Mining award, while the Codelco–SQM public-private partnership was named Deal of the Year – Mining.

Santiago, October 16, 2026. Carey received five honors at the 2026 IFLR Americas Awards, held on October 15 in New York. Executive Chairman Jaime Carey attended the ceremony alongside partners Rafael Vergara and Cristián Eyzaguirre to accept the awards.

The firm was named Chile National Firm of the Year and Chile National Firm of the Year – Mining, while Rafael Vergara received the Partner of the Year – Mining award. The Deal of the Year – Mining award went to the public-private partnership between Codelco and SQM, a transaction on which Carey served as legal counsel. Rounding out the five distinctions, Jaime Carey, the firm's Executive Chairman, was honored with the Latin America Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his career and contributions to the legal profession.

In accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award, Jaime Carey reflected on what it takes to build a lasting institution and acknowledged the people who have shaped his career.

"One of the most important lessons I have learned is that building a successful law firm is not just about bringing together talented lawyers. It is about creating a culture of excellence, integrity, trust, creativity and teamwork," he said.

Drawing a parallel between a law firm and a football team, Carey emphasized that while individual talent matters, lasting success depends on collaboration and the ability to create opportunities for others. He also stressed that financial success should be the result of serving clients well, acting with integrity and creating lasting value.

Carey also reflected on his experience leading the International Bar Association (IBA), which reinforced his conviction that the legal profession carries responsibilities extending beyond individual practice, including upholding the rule of law, safeguarding the independence of the legal profession and maintaining public trust.

"Ultimately, a career is measured not only by what we achieve, but also by the people we work with, the values we stand for and the opportunities we create for others," he said.

Carey dedicated the recognition to his colleagues and clients, expressing particular gratitude to his wife and family for their support throughout his career.

Three Awards Highlight Carey's Mining Practice

The three mining-related distinctions recognized different aspects of Carey's work in the sector: the firm's standing as Chile National Firm of the Year – Mining, Rafael Vergara's recognition as Partner of the Year – Mining, and the Codelco–SQM public-private partnership being named Deal of the Year – Mining.

"I see this award as recognition of the entire team. In mining, every matter requires a combination of experience, technical expertise and perspectives from different practice areas. That is why I am particularly pleased that this recognition comes alongside awards for Carey's mining practice and for a transaction we advised on. I would especially like to acknowledge the firm's Corporate and M&A team, represented on this matter by our partner Cristián Eyzaguirre. This is a shared achievement and another opportunity to thank our clients for their trust," said Rafael Vergara.

The award for the Codelco–SQM public-private partnership recognizes both the transaction itself and the work of the law firms involved in advising on it.

The IFLR Americas Awards recognize legal innovation in cross-border transactions. The evaluation process considers the complexity of the legal work, the challenges involved in executing transactions and the impact of innovative legal solutions on market practice, based on research conducted by IFLR's editorial and research teams.
