Leading lights

By completing this survey, all of the participating firms have demonstrated an awareness of the importance of the practice of pro bono. Indeed, the results suggest that they are all making headway in instilling a pro bono culture in their institutions, albeit in different ways and at varying speeds.

Our research reveals that some of those firms demonstrate an above-average commitment to pro bono by making it an essential part of their philosophy and professional infrastructure. Based on responses to this survey, research over the years and subsequent conversations with those close to the practice, we have selected from the participants a group of firms that we believe should be in the spotlight due to their considerable efforts towards institutionalising the practice and the significant amount of pro bono work they do.

In celebration of their achievements we list those law firms in the shaded table below.

We have taken a number of factors into consideration when drawing up this list, including how institutionalized the service is. For example, we were interested in whether the firm is a signatory of the PBDA and, importantly, meeting the PBDA’s commitments. These commitments include taking steps to institutionalize the practice, which we would consider relevant whether or not a firm is a signatory. For example, does the firm monitor pro bono hours and does it have a pro bono coordinator? Is pro bono work tied to associate training, evaluation and salary? We also wanted to know how many of a firm’s lawyers do pro bono, and how much they do. In those countries where it is applicable, we placed importance on whether the firm is a member of a clearing house and whether the firm supports it financially.

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, we hope it will give readers an idea of the efforts that firms across Latin America are taking to provide free legal services to those in need.
