United States imposes additional 50% tariff on products containing copper
August 1, 2025

On July 30, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing, on national security grounds, an additional 50% tariff on the copper content value in imported semi-finished and derivative products, effective August 1, 2025.

The affected products include tubes, cables, rods, sheets, wires, and copper-based electrical components.

Although refined copper is not included in this measure, the U.S. government will  consider the gradual implementation of a 15% tariff starting in 2027 and a 30% tariff beginning in 2028, subject to a report from the Secretary of Commerce to be issued by June 30, 2026.

Additionally, as of August 7, 2025, a general 10% customs duty will apply to import of Chilean products into the United Stated.
