Ministry of the Environment Submits Draft Regulation of the National System of Protected Areas for Public Consultation

On February 20, 2026, the Chilean Ministry of the Environment initiated the public consultation process for the Draft Regulation of the National System of Protected Areas (the “Draft Regulation”). The purpose of this regulation is to establish the provisions governing the National System of Protected Areas (“SNAP”).

The Draft Regulation addresses, among others, the following key aspects:

  • Procedures and requirements for the creation, modification, and removal of State protected areas, including criteria and stages for their designation or modification.
  • Regulation of management plans for State protected areas, which will serve as the main planning instruments for their administration and conservation.
  • Creation of private protected areas, establishing rules for their incorporation into the system.
  • Regime and benefits applicable to private protected areas, including the conditions under which they may be integrated into the national system.

The Draft Regulation will be subject to public consultation for a period of 30 business days from its publication in the Official Gazette, which will run until April 6, 2026.

Comments may be submitted by any natural or legal person through the electronic platform made available by the Ministry of the Environment (https://consultasciudadanas.mma.gob.cl/portal) or in writing before the Ministry or the respective Regional Ministerial Secretariats.
