Apostille Convention
August 25, 2016

As of August 30th, 2016, Chile will become a signatory to the Hague Convention, commonly known as the “Apostille Convention”, which eliminates the requirement to legalize foreign public documents.  The process of authenticating foreign documents will be reduced to a single step, whether it is carried out in Chile or in another signatory country, depending on where the document was issued. Through the issuing of an apostille by a competent authority, the authenticity of the document is certified and must be recognized by other countries that have signed and ratified the Apostille Convention.

Likewise, documents issued in Chile that have an apostille affixed will be considered valid in all other signatory countries without requiring any additional certification. The Apostille Convention applies only to the 112 signatory countries (complete list available at https://www.hcch.net/es/instruments/conventions/status-table/?cid=41).

Regarding countries which are not members of the Apostille Convention, the traditional multi-stage legalization process must be used.
