Gonzalo Fernández is partner and head of Carey y Cía.’s Litigation Group. His practice focuses primarily in the areas of litigation, national and international arbitration, corporate law, securities, and business law.

Mr. Fernández has been a professor of Civil Law at the Universidad Católica de Chile School of Law since 1997. From 1998 to 1999, he worked as a foreign associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York. Currently he is member of the panel of the Arbitration Center of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce and was appointed by the Government as a member of the panel for dispute resolution at Mercosur. He has been recognized as one of the best litigators in the country by publications such as Chambers & Partners and Latin Lawyer. He has published several articles about arbitration in local and international media. Presently, he represents the firm in the Pro-bono Foundation, of which he is an active member.

Mr. Fernández is a graduate of the Universidad Católica de Chile School of Law, having been admitted with the career’s highest score in 1987. He won the best student award from 1987 to 1991. In 1989, he was awarded the University Merit Award for being the best student of the entire university. He also won the Montenegro, Tocornal and Gutiérrez awards in 1992 for being the best Law graduate of the School of Law, and was admitted to the Bar in 1994. In 1997, he was a Fulbright scholar at Harvard Law School, where he received a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in 1998.

He is fluent in Spanish and English.
