Claudio Lizana is a senior member of Carey y Cía.’s Corporate / Mergers & Acquisitions Group and Head of the Antitrust Group. His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, business law, securities, and antitrust and trade regulations. Lately, he has focused on developing and leading the Antitrust Law Group Practice at Carey y Cía. In year 2000, he was appointed partner of the firm.

As of 1988, he has combined his private practice activities with academic work.  At present, he is professor of securities laws at the Universidad de Chile Law School.  Also, he is co-author of the book Dumping and Disloyal International Competition (1995).

He has participated as leading attorney in several transactions involving important domestic and foreign companies within all economic areas, including the government of Chile in the negotiation, design and implementation of certain processes for the incorporation of private equity to state-owned companies.

In 1999 he represented the Government in the sale of ESVAL, the first water distribution company being privatized in Chile (for approx. US$140 million); also, in such year represented Sempra International (US company) in its acquisition, along with PSEG, of Chilquinta Energía, an electricity distribution company (for approx. US$500 million); in 2001 represented Telecom Italia in the acquisition of the control of ENTEL, the second largest telecommunications company in Chile (for approx. US$1.1 billion); also, in such year, represented PSEG (US Company) in the acquisition of the electricity group SAESA/Frontel (for approx. US$450 million) and its related financing and refinancing, and since then he has been advisor to PSEG in such companies.  In 2003, he represented Anglian Water in its disposition of ESVAL (for approx. US$100 million).  Most recently, represented K+S Aktiengesellschaft in its acquisition of Sociedad Punta de Lobos S.A. (“SPL”) in 2006 (for approx. US$480 million), and since then has been appointed as a Board Member of SPL and Empremar S.A.

Mr. Lizana studied law at the Universidad de Chile and was admitted to the Bar in 1990. In 1993, he received a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the Harvard University Law School. The same year, he studied Politics of Global Finance in the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He is fluent in Spanish and English.
