Luis Seguel is a member of Carey y Cia.’s Tax Group. He assists clients on local and international tax consulting, corporate reorganizations and especially in tax litigation defense, both before administrative (Chilean IRS) and judiciary courts (Court of Appeals and Supreme Court).

Mr. Seguel served as Senior Manager at Ernst & Young Chile’s Department of Tax Consulting Services until 2010, a company he joined in 2000, and where he was in charge of the defense of their main tax trials. He began his career in taxation in 1998 at the Endress y Cía. law firm.

Mr. Seguel is a lawyer and Bachelor of Law and Social Sciences from the Universidad de Chile. He is a candidate for the degree of Master of Laws, Tax Planning and Management offered by the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. In 2002, he pursued graduate studies in General Tax Law at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain.

Since 2006 he has been the Chair Professor for the Tax Clerkship’s workshop of the Department of Legal Aid Clinic of the Universidad de Chile’s Law School, which is imparted to undergraduate law students to learn defense and advising on tax litigations.

Mr. Seguel is also a professor in the Master in Tax Law course offered by the Universidad de Chile’s Law School, as well as a professor at the Economics and Business School of the same University. He has also worked as a professor in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and served as assistant in the Department of Economic Law at the School of Law of the Universidad de Chile from 1994 to 2004.

He co-wrote the article named “Justicia Tributaria y Delegación de Facultades Jurisdiccionales” (“Tax Justice and Delegation of Jurisdictional Powers”), published in the Outstanding Rulings 2006/Sentencias Destacadas 2006 yearbook. He has been a speaker on tax matters at various seminars organized by the Universidad de Chile.

Mr. Seguel has been recognized by International Tax Review as one of the best tax litigation attorneys in Chile in the 2008 and 2009 editions.

He is fluent in Spanish.
