Guillermo Carey is partner and head of Carey y Cía.’s Intellectual Property and Information Technology Group. His practice specializes in the areas of intellectual property, intellectual property litigation, licensing, distribution and franchise agreement, data privacy, technology law, trademarks, patents, and electronic commerce.
In 2004, Mr. Carey was appointed Assistant Secretary General of AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) with responsibility over the Americas, and Vicepresident of the Domain Names and IP Numbers National Council in Chile. He is currently a member of the Board of the Chilean Industrial Property Association (ACHIPI); of the National Consulting Council of the Computer Law Studies Center (Centro de Estudios de Derecho Informático, CEDI) and also has been appointed by the Government of Chile as a member of “Grupo Acción Digital,” part of the governmental plan for the development of Chile’s digital agenda, working in the regulatory development group. As well, he has recently been elected as the Vice-President of the National Council for Domain Names and IP Addresses of Chile, which is chaired by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications.
Mr. Carey has been very active in the development of Chilean domain name policies. In 1998, he was appointed as Arbitrator of the Chilean Country Code Name Registrar, NIC Chile. That same year, he became a member of NIC Chile’s advisory board and formed part of the group who drafted the local dispute resolution policy for NIC Chile. Based on his experience attained at the national level, he was elected as the Intellectual Property Constituency’s Representative to the Names Council of the Domain Name Supporting Organization (DNSO) of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) for a two-year period (2000-2002). In 2002, he was also appointed as a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Panelist for the resolution of domain name disputes and Chair of the Q-160 ICANN Task Force of AIPPI. He has been active in giving lectures and presentations on Internet Legal related matters and Intellectual Property matters.
In 2010, he was recognized by the Client Choice Guide as the Best Individual Lawyer in Intellectual Property.
Mr. Carey studied law at the Universidad Católica de Chile and was admitted to the Bar in 1994. That year, he served as an Assistant Professor of Commercial Law at the Universidad Católica School of Law. Subsequently, he worked at the Intellectual Property Department of Philip Morris International, Inc., New York, U.S.A. (1995-1996).
He is fluent in Spanish and English.
