Christus Health enters Chilean healthcare sector

Carey has helped US not-for-profit Catholic healthcare provider Christus Health acquire Chile’s largest private healthcare group, Red de Salud Universidad Católica.

Cariola, Díez, Pérez-Cotapos & Cía Ltda advised Red de Salud, which is affiliated to Santiago’s Pontificia Universidad Católica. The deal closed on 14 February and saw Christus Health pay US$205 million to acquire a 40 per cent stake in the Chilean healthcare company. Carey associate Francisco Guzmán notes that structuring the deal required a reorganisation of Red de Salud, which needed to partially detach itself from the university in order to enter into the new partnership with Christus Health.

“Some of the assets of Red de Salud are also used for academic activities or other purposes not related to health services, and it was a challenge to find satisfactory solutions for all the parties involved,” he says. The deal represents Christus Health’s second foray into Latin America, adding to its presence in several of Mexico’s northern states.
